Courage Cocktail Radio Hour: Long Lives, Long View
Partnerships in Aging is excited to work with the Courage Cocktail Radio Hour. Producer and host, Lee Ann McClymont, has created a five-part radio series broadcasting over WCOM LPFM, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC, which will feature five, hour-long radio shows examining current experiences in aging in Orange County through the lens of innovators, academics, volunteers, and artists. The series will feature live interviews with guests of differing backgrounds all of whom share a common interest in leading vibrant and productive lives throughout the entire course of their lifespans.
September 7, 2016 “SALT”
Captain Archie Daniel of the Orange County Sherriff’s Department will introduce the SALT Program: “Seniors and Lawmen Together.” SALT is an innovative program serving over two hundred seniors living throughout Orange County. This program relies on a mutual support of a team of volunteers and a long term commitment of the Sherriff’s Office of Orange County to the well-being of its elders. September 14, 2016 “Portraits”
Photographer Chris Adamczyk, PhD is the featured artist of the “Living Long Lives” exhibit opening September 20, 2016 at the UNC’s Ackland Art Museum. Dr. Adamczyk will give a behind-the-scenes tour of the Portrait Exhibit which she has produced featuring the passion and vibrancy of people living a long life. The exhibit, titled, “Living Long Lives,” will open on September 20, 2016 the Ackland Art Museum on UNC Chapel Hill’s Campus. This episode of Courage Cocktail will also include an audio tour of the Greenville Photo & Camera Store, ASAP, to help listeners learn what really goes on after a picture is taken to make the printing, framing, and scale work harmoniously. September 21, 2016 “Volunteering”
Martha Brunstein is President of the Friends of Chapel Hill Library. She leads an organization of 80+ volunteers and over 400 Friends members. The Friends is an association of persons committed to furthering the excellence of the Chapel Hill Public Library by raising money for library needs, sponsoring programs for adults and children, and fostering interest in the Chapel Hill Public Library. Martha spends countless hours volunteering at the library and will visit to share her insights on the importance of leading a vibrant life that harnesses the passion and energy of interests often developed in childhood but put “on-hold” until retirement. September 28, 2016 “Re-Tiring Re-Imagined”
Peter Stein, PhD, past Associate Director for Aging Workforce Initiatives at the UNC Institute on Aging in Chapel Hill. He was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia two years before the Nazi occupation of Prague to a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. His father was forced into slave labor and later deported to Terezin (Theresienstadt), a work and death camp which he survived. His father’s family of nine were all killed in concentration camps. Peter attended public schools in New York, learned English; graduated from the City College of New York and earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University. For a number of years he was Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Center at Wm. Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. Our conversation will focus on Professor Stein’s work in Holocaust Studies and also his current work involving re-imagining retiring. Is there a better to approach retiring? October 5, 2016 “Eldercare”
Paul Klever is the Executive Director of Charles House. Charles House Association operates a Daytime Eldercare Center for seniors in Chapel Hill, two neighborhood-based residential eldercare homes in Orange County, and the Charles House Center for Community Caregiving. The mission of Charles House Association: Enriching the lives of seniors and supporting families caring for aging family members. Representing the community’s commitment to its elders, Paul Klever brings a personal commitment to services for people with aging issues, along with experience and administrative skills honed in his previous positions. Paul holds a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelors of Social Work from the University of Kansas. He began his career with a focus on eldercare and aging services as a social worker and activities director in long-term care facilities in the Midwest. Paul also gained experience as an administrator, leading the development of geriatric services for a hospital system in Colorado. Paul and his wife, Sally, came to know first hand the challenges facing caregiving families when together they cared for Sally’s parents in their home through the last two years of her parents’ lives.
